Advanced Media Corporation (Toshima-ku, Tokyo, CEO: Suzuki Kiyoyuki, hereinafter referred to as "Advanced Media") has succeeded in implementing Distributed Speech Recognition (DSR), which enables advanced voice recognition on mobile phones with current capabilities.
Until now, mobile phones alone have had content such as voice search of registered phone numbers and simple voice games. There were also services such as ticket reservations through voice dialogue with a computer by calling a center. However, they were far from being easy to use, interesting, or convenient, and unfortunately, they have not penetrated our lives. Advanced Media's DSR for mobile phones enables voice recognition at the level of tens of thousands of words, which was previously impossible, such as inputting navigation destinations while looking at the screen, inputting addresses nationwide, inputting station names for station route searches, and inputting email text. This dramatically expands the range of uses of mobile phones as information terminals, and makes true ubiquitous computing possible.
Advanced Media's DSR for mobile phones does not use voice calls at all, but extracts only the features necessary for voice recognition from the voice data and transmits them to the server using packet communication. Therefore, there is no drop in voice recognition accuracy due to communication noise or communication conditions, which is seen in voice recognition for voice calls such as the ticket reservation mentioned above. Moreover, since it can be easily linked to browsers and applications, it is possible to input voice while looking at the screen and immediately check the input results visually. By equipping mobile phones with this DSR, it will be possible to efficiently perform advanced voice input using packet communication networks, and there is no doubt that the range of applications for mobile phones as information terminals will expand dramatically.
Advanced Media has recently commercialized a small distributed voice recognition module that can be connected to mobile phones currently on the market, using the DSR LSI that Fujitsu Limited (Head office: Minato-ku, Tokyo; President and CEO: Hiroaki Kurokawa; hereinafter "Fujitsu") has successfully prototyped. The use of this module will enable the development of various applications for mobile phones that use DSR technology. Shipments for evaluation and development purposes will begin in October to mobile phone manufacturers, carriers, and content providers.
This module is a joint development and commercialization of Advanced Media's AmiVoice(R) DSR technology and Fujitsu's semiconductor technology. The two companies plan to connect it to NTT DoCoMo's FOMA(R) business consumer terminals, which are scheduled to be released next spring, and Vodafone's V602SH terminals, so that mobile phone manufacturers, carriers, and content providers can evaluate and develop various applications. It is said that this FOMA(R) business consumer terminal will be equipped with a browser that allows access to general Internet sites and a function that supports public wireless LAN services. If it is installed, it is expected that the synergistic effect with high-precision and advanced voice input will dramatically improve convenience in a wide range of business situations.
