First domestic survey on the use of AI agents and collaboration with humans: 52.7% of respondents said the ideal collaborative relationship is "AI assists, humans take the lead"

In the US, the "AI employment ice age" is a hot topic. Will AI take away people's jobs? There is a disparity in understanding of the "difference between AI agents and generative AI." Management has about three times the level of understanding of regular employees.

Advanced Media Inc. (Head office: Toshima-ku, Tokyo; Chairman and CEO: Kiyoyuki Suzuki; hereinafter referred to as "Advanced Media") conducted a "Survey on the Use of AI Agents and Collaboration with People" targeting 1,000 business people in their 20s to 60s in Japan. This release reports on the questions from the survey regarding awareness, understanding, and concerns regarding collaboration with AI.

Investigation background

Advanced Media's vision is "Human Communication Integration (HCI)," and we aim to realize natural communication between people and machines and create a prosperous future. AmiVoice, the AI speech recognition system developed and provided by our company, plays an important role as a "Human Collaborative Interface" that supports collaboration between people and AI.
In recent years, the spread of generative AI has led to rapid advances in the use of AI in companies, and AI agents that enable more advanced automation and decision-making support are attracting attention. However, as AI advances in business efficiency, concerns that "AI will take away people's jobs" are becoming more apparent. In particular, some overseas media have pointed to a situation known as the "AI employment ice age," in which the rapid development of AI is affecting the employment environment. As the use of AI advances in Japan, expectations and concerns about AI are mixed, and it is thought that deepening understanding of AI and considering ways in which people and AI can work together will become increasingly important. Against this backdrop, we conducted this survey to understand expectations and concerns regarding the role and introduction of AI agents.

■ 64.2% of respondents said they "didn't know" the difference between AI agents and generative AI

In response to the question, "Do you understand the difference between AI agents and generative AI?", 35.8% of respondents answered "I clearly understand (9.6%)" or "I vaguely understand (26.2%)." Additionally, 64.2% answered "I don't know," with 41.8% saying they've heard of it but don't know the difference, and 22.4% saying they don't know at all.
Furthermore, when looking at the results by position in the private sector, those who answered that they "clearly understand" were 20.6% of management and 6.5% of regular employees, showing a large difference of about three times between positions.

■ 24.1% have implemented or are considering implementing AI agents

In response to the question, "Is the introduction of AI agents progressing in your workplace?", 11.6% of respondents answered "Already introduced" and 12.5% answered "Considering introduction." The total number of companies that have introduced or are considering introduction was 24.1%.

■ The most common concern was "security and information leaks"

In response to the question, "What are your concerns about introducing AI agents?", the most common answer was "security and information leaks (51.4%)." This was followed by "low accuracy and reliability (46.9%)," indicating that nearly half of respondents have concerns about the quality of AI. Additionally, approximately one-quarter of respondents expressed concern about the "reduction of human jobs (24.5%)" due to the introduction of AI agents.

On the other hand, 52.0% of respondents answered "I don't feel much (37.2%)" or "I don't feel anything at all (14.8%)," meaning the majority did not show any major concerns.

■ 63.3% responded that introducing AI agents would improve work efficiency

In response to the question, "Do you think AI agents will make your work more efficient?", 63.3% answered "very efficient (12.0%)" or "somewhat efficient (51.3%)." On the other hand, only a small number of people answered "not very efficient (11.8%)" or "not efficient at all (5.7%)."

Advanced Media's opinion

The survey results revealed that while there are high expectations for the use of AI agents, there are still significant concerns about security, information leaks, and accuracy. In addition, a certain number of people (one in three) feel that AI agents "may take away their jobs," and concerns about the impact of AI on work cannot be overlooked.
Meanwhile, the most popular answer for ideal collaboration was "AI assisted, humans led," demonstrating that companies are not seeking a replacement by AI, but rather a human-centered form of collaboration. Furthermore, as 63.3% expect work efficiency to improve, AI agents are increasingly being recognized as a presence that contributes to business improvement. However, there is a roughly three-fold difference between management and general employees in terms of understanding of the "difference between AI agents and generative AI," and this disparity could be one factor hindering collaboration between humans and AI. To ensure healthy ongoing collaboration between humans and AI, it is essential to improve technical accuracy and safety, as well as raise the level of understanding of AI, including among frontline employees.

Advanced Media aims to realize our vision of "HCI (Human Communication Integration)" - natural communication between people and machines - and will continue to focus on providing new solutions and customer services.
